Butterfly Moments: Encouraging Encounters at an Inner-City High School

Be prepared to be deeply moved by the stories of the adolescents you will meet in Butterfly Moments. This unique collection of real life encounters, compassionately shared by Caroline Green, is set an inner-city high school on the edge of Hillbrow. Here, where poverty dictates, gangsters call the shots and temptations beckon, Caroline pioneered a transformational programme entitled The Butterfly Movement. During the eight years she served as the student counsellor, she witnessed countless students overcome the formidable challenges they faced.

Most of the Encounters are based at Barnato Park High School, a large inner-city co-ed government school situated on the edge of Hillbrow in Johannesburg. Barnato Park was at the forefront of educational transformation during South Africa’s transition to democracy. I taught English at the school between 1995 and 2002, only to return four years later – this time as the Student Counsellor and Life Orientation teacher from 2007 to 2014.

Inner-city schools around the world will be able to relate to the challenges facing the students described in these stories: violence, poverty and absent fathers to name a few. The underlying themes, however, are common to students from any and every background. Adolescents often struggle with issues such as self-esteem, substance abuse and suicide. A variety of these themes are covered in these stories.

Interspersed are some entertaining anecdotes and apology notes for some light-hearted relief.
